Danny: Hey Aoi. You know, this interview is in English
(laughs)
Aoi: Oh no!
(laughs)
Danny: How are you today?
Aoi: I’m fine, thank you.
Danny: Tell me…who were some of your
teachers when you were a student at NIC?
Aoi: Let’s see…Lisa, Paul, Drew, Ray…and some
others…
Danny: Yeah, Paul is still here. Maybe you’ll see him later
today.
Aoi: I hope
so.
Danny:
Do you still keep contact with some of your old NIC friends?
Aoi: Yes.
Danny: So some of them will watch your show
tomorrow night?
Aoi: Of course.
But some of them are in the U.S. so they can’t watch it.
Danny: Sure…Besides acting,
you must love studying as well. I mean, you had a 4.0 GPA your first semester at
NIC.
Aoi: Yes
(laughs)
Danny: How much did you study here?
Aoi: Well…I studied a lot when I first entered NIC… More than
5 hours a day…but it decreased a little after the first
semester…
Danny:
Yeah, but you finished with a very good GPA. I think 3.83. That’s very good!
Let’s talk about your acting. Is this something you’ve always wanted to do? I
mean, at what point in your life did you want to become an actress?
Aoi: Since I was a kid. I
started taking dance lessons when I was six years old. At first I wanted to
become a musical dancer. When I was 11, I passed my musical audition and then
discovered that acting was fun, too.
Danny: Wow! I didn’t know you started
so early. How did your classes at NIC prepare you for Santa Monica & your
acting career?
Aoi: Well…At
first, I didn’t like writing essays at NIC. I didn’t get it when I was here. But
when I went to Santa Monica, it all made sense then…
Danny: Yeah…sometimes it takes a while
to get it.
Aoi: Yeah, but I
finally understood what I had been doing, so it was helpful. I had to write lots
of papers at NIC & SMC. At SMC I even wrote papers in theater class. You
know, I had to write about a play that I read or a production that I watched.
Danny:
Yeah…I was a theater major as well. There are lots of fun papers to write in
school. Did you have any roles at SMC?
Aoi: I did some acting there. I took a great acting class
there. We had to do various scenes. I remember one time I had to do a scene with
a guy from Columbia, whose English was much better than mine! I remember one
scene where we had to play a boyfriend/girlfriend, and in the scene I had to
tell my boyfriend that I had been raped. It was hard. I had to cry in the scene,
but when we did it, he actually cried instead. I remember being so jealous of
him! Sometimes we had to do paperwork on our scenes and we would have to develop
the personality of the character, create an animal image of the person, and even
think about temperature and time of the scene. It was a lot of hard work.
Danny:
Besides studying…how was California and why did you decide to study there of all
places?
Aoi: Well…to be honest,
I love the beach! I also loved the Promenade ( a shopping center) near Santa
Monica Beach. I used to go there once a week for fun. You know, Tokyo is so
busy, but in California time passes so slowly. I also loved just going to
Starbucks or some caf? and meeting my friends near the beach
there.
Danny: Sounds fun! I miss that. So…moving along, how did you become an
actress with TOHO Entertainment Company?
Aoi: I have had my own website since I was 14. I made a CD
for a company and the president of the CD company introduced me to some people
at TOHO.
Danny: And you had many auditions to enter this company?
Aoi: So many! I had at least 4 or 5 of them,
and then they hired me!
Danny: I bet you and your family were so
excited to hear the news.
Aoi:
Yeah! I waited for them, and I was so happy when I heard the
news.
Danny: Where were you when they called?
Aoi: At home with my family.
Danny: They must be so proud
of you. Tell me about being on the set of Trick. How was that for
you?
Aoi: Well…we did 2 stories
in only 10 days. It was actually shot in Ibaraki.
Danny: Really? What was a
typical day like on the set?
Aoi: I would wake up at about 5 a.m. but I only had to go for
the scene. It’s harder for people with the camera crew. Most of them only get
about 3 hours of sleep. For me, it wasn’t so hard.
Danny: How was it working with
Nogiwa & Nakama? They’re pretty famous.
Aoi: Well…I never met Nogiwa.
Danny: Really?
Aoi: No…she was not on the set when I was
there. Nakama is a good actress though. This is the 3rd Trick series. She did
the series before, so she knew everything about what to do this time around. You
know, I found out that we went to the same high school!
Danny: Really? It’s a small
world, isn’t it? Tell me, what is the hardest thing about
acting?
Aoi: Hmm…hard
question…probably the difference between reality and non-reality.
Danny: I
can imagine. I’m still having trouble distinguishing the two (laughs). Who was
the funniest person on the set?
Aoi: Definitely Masato Irie. He used to be a theatrical
actor. His performance was always funny, and he always made everyone laugh
between tapings.
Danny: Sounds like a fun guy. Besides Nogiwa
and Nakama, tell me about some other Japanese actresses you admire a
lot.
Aoi: Hmmm…probably Shinobu
Otake. She’s so passionate in her acting. Her character has not changed and no
one can play her roles like she does.
Danny: Which actors or actress would you
love to work with in the future?
Aoi: Hmmm…good question… I would love to work with Takako
Matsu and Yuji Oda. Yuji is a real entertainer! Do you know
them?
Danny: Uh…yeah…well, maybe I will get to know them (laughs). Good luck on
eventually working with those people. You’ve obviously reached some of your
goals by now. What are some other goals for the future?
Aoi: To win an award. A movie
award.
Danny: I wish you a lot of luck on that one. So…you’re up here on the 6th
floor of NIC. How has the school changed since you left?
Aoi: Hmmm…the students. They look so
pure.
Danny: Well…you look so young too. Aoi, thank you so much for your time. We
will look out for future projects involving you. Please let us know about them
when they occur.
Aoi: OK, I
will.
Danny: Before you leave would you like to give a special message to our NIC
students this year?
Aoi:
OK…Don’t study?
Danny: Wait a second
(laughs)
Aoi: (Laughs) Let me
finish. Don’t study…LEARN!
Danny: That’s so very appropriate! Thanks you so much for
coming.
Aoi: My pleasure.
